Mitsuran Honkan
A shop-based fashion health in Kiyamachi, a few minutes' walk from Gion-Shijo Station. Foreigners welcome, and no hotel needed.
Why I pick it
I don't list shops I found on the internet. Mitsuran Honkan (三つ乱本館) is run by Nicoro Group, and I know the company president personally. In my opinion it's the best place in Kyoto for a first-timer from abroad, for three reasons:
- No hotel needed. It's a fashion health: everything happens in a private room inside the shop, so the "my hotel doesn't allow visitors" problem never comes up.
- It's where you already are. Kiyamachi is the center of Kyoto's nightlife, walking distance from Gion and Kawaramachi.
- It welcomes foreigners. English is OK at reception. Many Kyoto shops don't accept foreigners at all.
What makes it different
Very few fuzoku shops in Japan run a rotation system — during one visit, you meet more than one cast member in turn. Mitsuran Honkan does. And you can be welcomed by cast members in kimono, which is a rare experience even for Japanese guests.
Honestly? Every guy visiting Kyoto should try it at least once.

How to visit
- Find the building. From Gion-Shijo or Kyoto-Kawaramachi Station, walk to Kiyamachi-dori, just north of Shijo-dori. The Top Hat Building is near the smoking area by the Takase River. Its entrance is just left of a tonkotsu ramen shop — look for the "TH" sign.
- Go to reception on the 6th floor. Staff will explain the courses and the total price before you pay.
- Tell them your code. Say "MRIDA" at reception, so the shop knows Mr.IDA sent you.
- Pay, wait, and enjoy. You'll be shown to a private room.
Before you go
- Listen to what's included. Don't ask for more.
- No photos, no video.
- Stop means stop. Respect the cast.
- Shower when asked. Come sober enough to be good company.
- Pay what you were quoted. If the bill changes, tell us.
The shop will turn away anyone under 18, anyone who is heavily drunk, anyone suspected of drug use, members of organized crime groups, and people who work in the nightlife or scouting business.
